10 Steps to Reduce Breast Cancer
While the cause of breast cancer is unknown, factors such as body weight, physical activity, alcohol, and hormone replacement therapy has been proven to influence risk. Recent research has found that women who exercised 30-45 minutes each day had a 20-40% lower risk of developing breast cancer than those who were inactive. Recent studies have also revealed that the risk of breast cancer increases with each additional drink, which means women should limit their intake to one glass of alcohol a day and aim for a few alcohol-free days each week.
The Cancer Council of NSW recommends the following 10 easy steps to help women reduce their breast cancer risk:
- Keep Active – do moderate exercise.
- Eat 5 serves of vegetables and 2 pieces of fruit daily.
- Keep your weight within normal range (control body fat).
- Drink less alcohol.
- Don’t smoke.
- Know your own breasts – if you notice any changes, see your doctor immediately.
- If you are between 50 and 69 have a free mammogram every two years.
- Keep informed, call the Cancer Helpline on 13 11 20 if you have any questions regarding cancer.
- Have your breasts examined regularly by your doctor.
- Menopausal women should consult their doctors about all the risks and benefits of taking HRT.
